Abstract

This education session reviewed the burden of seasonal influenza and the need for enhanced protection in adults, with a focus on Hong Kong and global data from recent seasons. It summarizes current epidemiology, including the emergence of drifted A/H3N2 subclades and their contribution to excess hospitalizations and mortality, as well as local outcomes such as severe pediatric and adult cases. The lecture then examined influenza-related complications, highlighting the elevated short term risks of acute myocardial infarction, stroke, pneumonia, and destabilization of chronic cardiometabolic disease following infection. Evidence from randomized and real world studies comparing standard-dose egg-based vaccines with newer higher antigen and recombinant formulations was presented, demonstrating improved immunogenicity and relative vaccine effectiveness, particularly in older and high risk adults. Evolving international and local guideline recommendations prioritize recombinant influenza vaccines for older adults, those with comorbidities, and residents of long term care facilities.
