Obesity Alliance
July 2026
Obesity is a chronic disease. It is not just a physical image problem, as most people might have perceived it that way. Obesity is associated with multiple medical conditions including diabetes, hyperentenson, cardiovascular diseases, sleep apnoea, joint and spine issues, and depression, etc.
The body mass index (BMI) is one way to assess the degree of obesity. For Asians, a BMI of 23 and above is considered overweight, while a BMI of 25 and above is considered obese. Another parameter for assessing obesity is central obesity, defined as a waist circumference of 90 cm or more in males and 80 cm or more in females. According to Department of Health data from 2020-22, 55% of adults in Hong Kong are overweight or obese, while in the mainland, the comparable figure is 50.7%.
In July 2025, the Hong Kong Chinese Medical Association joined hands with 2 other medical organisations, the Hong Kong Obesity Society and the Hong Kong Metabolic and Bariatric Society, to form the Obesity Alliance to raise public and healthcare worker awareness of the importance of addressing obesity.
This Alliance came into existence at an opportune time, as both national and local government initiatives have been undertaken in recent years to tackle obesity. In June 2024, the National Health Commission (NHC) of China announced a partnership among 16 government departments to embark on a 3-year plan for weight management (1). Measures range from public education, community screening, and outpatient intervention. On 4 March 2026, World Obesity Day, the HKSAR Government introduced the Weight Management Action Plan, echoing our national initiative (2). A 3-year step-wise promotion of weight management emphasising awareness, active change and sustainability.
